چکیده

JEL classification: F1 F12 We show theoretically and confirm empirically that domestic productivity has a significant impact on the demand for foreign varieties under the assumption that domestic and foreign varieties are imperfect substitutes. In particular, the demand for imported varieties ismore elastic for countries with comparative advantage. For an average good facing a median trade barrier, doubling the importer–exporter relative export performance decreases the number of imported varieties by 17%. Ourfindings suggest that the variety gains estimates could be significantly biased if we ignore the substitutability between imported and domestic varieties.

Productivity Spillovers, Terms of Trade and the ’Home Market Effect’

This paper analyzes the welfare implications of international spillovers related to productivity gains, changes in market size, or government spending. We introduce trade costs and endogenous varieties in a two-country general-equilibrium model with monopolistic competition, drawing a distinction between productivity gains that enhance manufacturing efficiency, and gains that lower the cost of ...

Firm Capabilities and Technology Spillover through Trade: Evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa

Using firm-level data for three Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries and four manufacturing industries, I examine how imports from OECD countries lead to productivity gains for domestic establishments through their knowledge absorption capabilities. I find that domestic firms with technology standards farther away from the international frontier benefit more from trade than those with technology...

An Information-Based Model of Foreign Direct Investment: The Gains from Trade Revisited

The financial aspects of Foreign direct investment (FDI) are the focus of this paper. The gains from trade argument (applied to intertemporal trade) is re-examined in this case of informational-asymmetry-driven FDI. FDI is observed to be a predominant form of capital flows to emerging economies, especially when they are liquidity-constrained internationally during a global financial crisis. We ...

Firm-Level Distortions, Trade, and International Productivity Differences

Developing countries typically exhibit small firm size, high dispersion of firm-level productivity, and low trade-to-output ratios. They also tend to export particularly less to more distant and smaller markets. To rationalize these facts, this paper develops a flexible, multi-country general equilibrium model of production and trade in which heterogeneous producers face both domestic size-depe...

To rationalize these facts, this paper develops a flexible, multi-country general equilibrium model of production and trade in which heterogeneous producers face b...
